Host a screening of a Happen Films documentary for your community. Learn how to hold a film screening and how to purchase a screening licence. HOST A SCREENING Film screenings are a great way to connect with your community and can be the perfect starting place for building local resilience. While most of our films are freely available on YouTube, if you’re holding an event you’ll need a public screening licence. Buy a screening license Why hold a screening? There are many benefits to hosting a film screening. You could use the event as a fundraiser for a project, political party or school; as an entertaining way to raise awareness about local environmental/community issues; as a way to bring members of your community together who might not otherwise meet; or, hey, just for fun! We’ve kept our licence fees low to be as accessible as possible to all communities. Please let us know if your situation isn’t met within the options we offer. Which films can I screen? You have lots of scope to create anything from a simple screening event through to a night filled with activities. If your aim is to create community connection and/or to raise awareness about local issues, here are some suggestions: Include a panel discussion after the film, inviting local experts to speak on the film’s subject. Show a collection of short films all around one theme – e.g.: “Tiny House film night”, “Be the Change film night”, “Permaculture Gardens film night” etc. If space allows, invite local groups to promote/share their wares, e.g., the local herb society could provide tea & coffee; the local seed library could set up a stand; local permaculture or organics educators/growers/farmers could have a table with flyers or samples of their produce, etc. These are all great ways that we’ve practised ourselves to create connections within our community at the same time as providing entertainment and time out. Why do I need a licence to screen films that are free to view online? As a rule, any public film screening, whether or not to a paying audience, requires licensing. If you’re screening our free-to-view films from YouTube there is, of course, nothing stopping you from doing so without a licence. However, when you purchase a download of our films, you receive a high-quality version that doesn’t require an internet connection to view and contains no ads. FEATURE FILMS Our feature films may be few to date but we've loved having the opportunity to make them. These two films have provided important transition stages for us as filmmakers – our first, A Simpler Way, was our launch pad into serious filmmaking, our second, Living the Change, brought multiple festival selections and awards and the enthusiasm and support of an audience the world over. This is a format less accessible to us as community-funded, low-budget filmmakers. We love short films because we can share so many stories across a range of subjects on a regular basis, but we'll always grab the opportunity to explore to a much greater extent an idea or a series of ideas when a feature film becomes viable. Check out the construction and a tour of this cute 10-square-metre mostly recycled tiny house with a lead-light geodesic dome window, built on land shared by a community committed to simple living. The build cost around $2500, and was completed by a group of mostly unskilled builders in Gippsland, Australia. The house has a loft bed, and work and living space below, with no need for a bathroom or kitchen as these are part of the community’s shared facilities. Using almost entirely reclaimed materials, including bits and pieces scavenged from building sites and dumpsters, the couple built their first home with no previous building experience. The teeny little house has a living area downstairs and above it a loft with a double bed. As they were living in community, Liam and Rachel didn’t need to include a kitchen and bathroom, as they have shared facilities and a communal living space nearby. This is their perfect retreat, surrounded by vegetable plots and looking out onto beautiful native bush. When, in 1987, Hugh let the local community know of his plans to allow the introduced ‘weed’ gorse to grow as a nurse canopy to regenerate farmland into native forest, people were not only skeptical but outright angry – the plan was the sort to be expected only of “fools and dreamers”. Now considered a hero locally and across the country, Hugh oversees 1500 hectares resplendent in native forest, where birds and other wildlife are abundant and 47 known waterfalls are in permanent flow. He has proven without doubt that nature knows best – and that he is no fool.
