Fools & Dreamers: Regenerating a Native Forest is a 30-minute documentary about Hinewai Nature Reserve, on New Zealand’s Banks Peninsula, and its kaitiaki/manager of 30 years, botanist Hugh Wilson. When, in 1987, Hugh let the local community know of his plans to allow the introduced ‘weed’ gorse to grow as a nurse canopy to regenerate farmland into native forest, people were not only skeptical but outright angry – the plan was the sort to be expected only of “fools and dreamers”. Now considered a hero locally and across the country, Hugh oversees 1500 hectares resplendent in native forest, where birds and other wildlife are abundant and 47 known waterfalls are in permanent flow. He has proven without doubt that nature knows best – and that he is no fool. - FAQs | Happen Films
Frequently Asked Questions – FAQs – about how Happen Films is funded, how to buy our films and how to share and screen our films. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) Click on an item in the dropdown menu below to learn more about everything from purchasing a film, watching a film and sharing a film to trouble shooting and even what gear we currently use! Support our work How do I watch your films? Most of our films are free to view on YouTube and can also be watched from right here on our website. Check out Watch Films in the main menu. You can also purchase our films so that you have them permanently available on your device to view, ad-free, offline, or with a license so that you can hold a public screening. Visit the store for more information. I’ve purchased a film but don’t have a download link / can’t download it. What can I do? When you bought the film from our Film Store you will have received a purchase receipt at the email address you provided (check your Spam folder if this didn’t reach you immediately). That email contains your download link. The link does not expire, so please keep the email, so that you can access it again if needed. To download the film, simply click on the link. You’ll be prompted to choose where to save it. The download time will depend on the file size (i.e., whether you’ve bought a short film or a feature film) and your internet connection. Once downloaded, store the file on a hard drive, USB stick, or in a folder on your computer from which you can play it. If the download is failing, the most likely problem is that your internet connection is not reliable enough for this purpose. You could try asking a friend to download it and then transfer the file to a hard drive or USB stick. If that’s not an option, please get in touch using the form on the Contact page . To watch a film on your iPad or iPhone, you’ll need to download it to your computer and then sync it to your device. I’m screening in a cinema and they’ve requested a DCP file. In New Zealand and Australia we have a limited number of DCP files available for an additional $20 plus postage. Most cinemas require the film 1–2 weeks ahead of the screening date and we’ll need at least 2 weeks’ notice to get it to you. We don't have DCP files for films under 30 minutes in length. Can I use your short films on my website/in my educational course? If you mean you’d like to embed one of our YouTube videos on your website, we’d of course be very happy for you to do so! Please do not download and re-upload our films, with or without changes, to your own channel or website. We earn an important part of our income from YouTube ad revenue and you would be taking our creative work for your own profit. Thanks for not doing this! If you'd like to upload one of our films for course attendees to access, then we will charge a small fee for usage. In this case, please get in touch using the form on the Contact page including info about the course, the number of people expected to be accessing it, and what you charge. If you have other plans for using our films in an educational or entry-cost setting, send us a message from the Contact page with full details. What are the films rated? Living the Change is officially rated PG. The rest of our films are exempt from rating due to being documentaries containing no offensive language. Do the films have subtitles? Our budget hasn’t extended to professional subtitling, but we have a wonderful team of volunteer translators from around the world who have contributed translations to some of our films. Check the film page to find subtitles available for download or go to YouTube to watch the film, where there may be more available. If you’re interested in adding subtitles, send us a message from the Contact page and we can send you the English subtitles with time code stamps. Are you interested in corporate branding collaborations? No, but thanks for asking! While our YouTube videos are monetised (meaning an ad plays at the beginning of each film – a critical income source for us), we choose not to collaborate with corporate brands or to sell products via our films. We don’t plan on changing our minds about this – even if your product is super-duper eco awesomeness – so we wish you well with your own business but request that you don’t email us offering a collaboration. Thanks again! How is Happen Films funded? We have a whole page about this! Click this link to head to the How is Happen Films Funded? webpage . What gear do you use? Our gear is the part of our lives that causes us the most conflict! For that reason, we prioritise buying secondhand wherever possible (obviously not batteries, nor hard drives). Our current gear is as follows: Main video camera: Canon C70 Lenses: Canon 16-35mm f/4, Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8; Sigma 50mm f/1.4; Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 External monitor: SmallHD Focus Audio: Sennheiser G4 wireless system, Sanken COS-11D lav mics, Sound Devices Mix-pre 3 ii audio recorder Tripod: Manfrotto 290 xtra with 701 HDV fluid head Stabiliser: DJI RS 3 Pro Editing computer: 2023 Macbook Pro Editing software: Final Cut Pro X Editing harddrive: Synology NAS What community guidelines do you operate under on social media? In order to create a positive and engaging environment within the Happen Films social media community, we ask that everyone treats each other with respect. In the small town of Riverton at the bottom of New Zealand’s South Island is Robert and Robyn Guyton’s amazing 23-year-old food forest. The 2-acre property has been transformed from a neglected piece of land into a thriving ecosystem of native and exotic trees where birds and insects live in abundance. Robert and Robyn are a huge inspiration to us, not only for their beautiful approach to healing the land and saving heritage trees and seeds, but for the way they’ve impacted on their local community. They’ve operated an environment centre in their town for over 20 years, where the community comes together to learn and discuss, buy produce and sit by the warm fire over a cuppa. We’ve even heard of folk who’ve up and moved to Riverton because they’re so inspired by the Guytons! - About | Happen Films
The Happen Films team is made up of Jordan, Antoinette, Anna and Nick. Read more about us. ABOUT HAPPEN FILMS We make films because we believe it’s the most powerful way we can share new ways of thinking, being, and doing. It's our way of contributing toward creating a new story for humanity to live by so that all of Earth’s creatures can thrive. We’re currently living through an exceptional time in human history, where what we’ve known as normal is breaking down due to environmental, cultural, and social limits being reached. This metacrisis has created the conditions for a massive global shift in the way we relate to the world and each other. We need to transition to not just living ‘sustainably’, but in a way that heals and regenerates the damage that’s being done. So how do we go about this? Exploring this question is what Happen Films was founded upon and is what drives us to do what we do. We want to find the people responding to the metacrisis and share their stories in order to inspire others to make change in their own lives and in their communities. Ourselves included! Support our work In the media Happen Films – On Inspiring Change Through Film Making Funding Happen For Happen Films Meet the Happen Films team Jordan Osmond In his mid-teens, growing up in Ballarat, Jordan was struck by how documentary films were having an impact on how he saw the world and lived his life. He wanted to get behind the camera and have a positive impact on the lives of others. Show More Antoinette Wilson Born in Tasmania, raised in Aotearoa New Zealand, Antoinette left university for a career in book publishing that lasted 20 years. As her understanding of the state of planet and human health developed, a journey of exploration led her towards a change in career that began with work in a market garden and completing her permaculture design certificate. - Funding | Happen Films
Find out about how Happen Films is funded and how we access funds from different sources like philanthropic funding, audience donations and YouTube ad revenue. HOW IS HAPPEN FILMS FUNDED? This is a question we’re often asked when people learn we choose not to take conventional film funding routes and make most of our films free to view. It’s a big subject for us and the ethics around how we fund our lives and our business have been deeply thought about. Support our work How do you make ends meet? We refer to our funding model as Community Supported Filmmaking, because we are almost entirely reliant on our audience for the funding of both our films and of Happen Films as a business. For the sake of resilience, we don’t have all our eggs in one basket; our sources of income are Patreon , Open Collective , YouTube ad revenue, screening licences, and one-off donations. (See the Support page for more info about each of these.) How are funds used? If you’re considering donating to Happen Films, you might be interested to know how your money will be used. Weekend trips to tropical islands? 🙂 Our major costs are the usual ones for a film production house, with the less usual element that we prioritse buying film gear secondhand (except for batteries and hard drives). The conflict between our films’ messages and the high energy/mining/waste involved in creating the gear we use is not lost on us and each purchase is thoughtfully made. (If you’re in film yourself and have a geeky interest in the gear we use, we’ve added the list on the FAQs page .) As we both lead relatively simple lifestyles we don’t need to fund luxuries. We pay ourselves a good wage whenever the business can afford it and it’s a priority for us to pay our contractors and colleagues standard industry rates. In 2020 we committed to two paid employees working a few hours each a week. The rest of our costs, outside of film production itself, go to platforms that enable the maintenance of this website, cloud file storage, subscriptions for editing and other post-production programmes and music libraries, and of course our accountancy programme and fees, gear insurance, and general home office costs. It all inevitably mounts up, even when you think of your business as tiny! In total, our monthly outgoings come to between NZ$7000 and $10,000, not counting film production, where each film has a separate budget. Usually NZ$15–20,000 for a short film and we’ve spent between NZ$40–80,000 for longer-form films. Ethics We want to live in a world in which all of Earth’s creatures can thrive in the way they’re meant to. At present this feels far from the reality of the world we live in but we try to live our lives in a way that contributes to making it possible. We’re white, middle class, educated, and a great deal of privilege and responsibility comes with those things. We were born and raised and live in countries that were colonised by our ancestors – Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. We don’t believe colonisation ended sometime in the past – we see that it continues around us and that we can easily play a part in its continuation if we’re thoughtless enough. We’re committed to being allies to indigenous cultures wherever we are, and we have much to learn for that commitment to be in action. Part of the learning is understanding whose stories it’s appropriate for us to tell and how to tell them respectfully. This is a constant work in progress. We came to filmmaking with a mission to share stories that contribute to creating a new narrative for humanity to live by. It’s profoundly important to us, but it’s not a mission that sits above our drive to create beautiful, engaging films – it’s on a par with it. We both live in a way that is aligned with the message we share in our films: low waste, minimal long-distance travel, growing as much of our own food as possible, and we prioritise secondhand and/or local for pretty much everything except underwear 🙂 We both strive to be useful and connected members of our communities and we support initiatives and movements that promote a move towards energy descent and a degrowth economy. - Farming | Happen Films
FILMS ABOUT FARMING There are as many ways to farm as there are things to be farming. Humans have farmed for millennia – for good or ill, depending on your perspective. What is the future of farming? Could it be regenerative and positive if we moved away from monocultures and dreadful practices like factory farming of animals? In our travels as filmmakers we've encountered a variety of approaches to farming land and much-loved animals and we're passionate about sharing through film the stories and mindset of the farmers we meet. Tom, Sarah, and their daughter Neesa live in a 20sqm off-grid tiny house on a property on the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. Instead of paying rent, they share the work of looking after the land with the owners, and both families share in the farm’s abundant produce. We were inspired by how much happier they’ve found themselves by living with less. Tom is a medical doctor and Sarah is an illustrator but both have chosen to reduce their work to almost nothing in order to have more time to focus on living well – a lifestyle choice that is more possible for many of us than we might think. Is there an age at which you stop being an activist for change? Not according to Helen Dew! In fact, Helen’s activism didn’t even begin until she was in her 60s. Back then, she was introduced to a woman who was campaigning to change the fragile and problematic global financial system. When Helen understood what the issues were, she realised, “ Now I know what to do with my life.” Our money system is integral to how we live our lives and the impact we have on each other and our planet. A lifelong gardener and an innately frugal child of the Great Depression, the concept of living simply is second nature to Helen. But as the world around her has become less and less ‘simple’ her passion has grown ever greater to educate her community about why we benefit from growing our own food, saving our own seeds, taking care of our water and other resources – and how all of these things are linked to the money system that dominates and impacts our lives. For Helen, a key element in building personal and community resilience is in building quality soil. From making biochar for her compost to petitioning the local council to create a natural burial park, she has worked tirelessly in so many ways to contribute to her community and to the planet. She is truly Something Beautiful for the World! Find out more about Helen's work: Living Economies website (co-founded by Helen) – information about Savings Pools. From Weedy Forests to Grassy Woodlands - English From Weedy Forests to Grassy Woodlands - Portuguese From Weedy Forests to Grassy Woodlands - Galician If you'd like to volunteer to create subtitles in your language, please contact us ! From Weedy Forests to Grassy Woodlands tells the story of a community-led initiative to mitigate forest fire risk using goats and hand tools rather than herbicides, heavy machinery, and burn-offs. On the edge of Daylesford, a town on Dja Dja Wurrung country in Victoria, Australia prone to massive bush fires, a small group of community-minded folk have pulled together to work towards restoring the ecology of their commons forest – in order to stop the future need for controlled burn-offs by the local fire authority. Burn-offs keep the township safe from out-of-control fires, but they hinder the forest’s ability to regenerate, and thus cannot provide the environment necessary for the diversity of insects, birds and animals that are necessary in a healthy forest on a healthy planet. Restoring the forest also allows for traditional indigenous burns to take place, as the danger created by flammable non-native species has been reduced. The work being done by the Goathand Cooperative is not only showing stunning results on the forest floor, it’s having much broader effects: the forest’s wildlife is thriving, the goats are healthy and happy, but in addition neighbours previously dubious about the project have come on board, so that new and strong community connections are being made. And as one Cooperative member says in the film, an important re-connection is also being made with nature. “We haven’t always been trammellers of land,” says Patrick Jones. This connection to the soil and to the forest is, he believes, “our way back to sanity”. From Weedy Forests to Grassy Woodlands offers inspiration to anyone looking for ways to regenerate their own or a commons forest, anyone feeling the urgency of mitigating the potential disasters of forest fires in the most natural way possible, anyone in a locality and position to use goats for that purpose, and just anyone seeking re-connection to the earth that created and sustains us!
